ARTIST CARTER BLACK

SKU: 280001

Carter Black has been painting the Hawaiian scene for the past 25 years, both as an architectural illustrator and as a landscape painter. Now examples of both can be seen at an exhibition currently showing at the Pauahi Tower Lobby Gallery. This is on the mezzanine floor of Pauahi Tower, on Bishop Square, corner of Bishop and King in the center of downtown Honolulu. With guest artist Jimmy Tablante. Don't miss this rare opportunity to see some of Oahu's most gorgeous locations, brought to life again with paint and canvas and the artist's eye, in these large, beautiful paintings, also on view at www.carterblackstudio.com. The show runs through March 13th.' Carter Black grew up on Long Island and attended Syracuse University School of Fine Arts in New York. He served with the Peace Corps in Tanzania and lived for a year in Tokyo, Japan. He has since then lived in Nairobi, Kenya for 12 years, and in Hawaii for a total of 25. He speaks fluent Swahili and Japanese. He has resided in Kailua, Hawaii since 1985, dividing his time between painting and commercial illustration. He has depicted numerous architectural projects as well as historic buildings in Hawaii and abroad. Now his interest has shifted back to the landscape and coastline of the two places he loves the most; Hawaii and Africa. Most of the locations depicted here are within half an hour of his home of the Windward side of Oahu. The mountains and the sea, defined by the ever changing skies and light of the beautiful islands of Hawaii. Carter Black has held numerous one-man shows over the years and his work is represented in the collections of the State of Hawaii, Harvard University, General Motors Corporation, Continental Airlines, Kaiser Permanente, and Bank of Hawaii, among others. These paintings are done in the loose but exacting medium of watercolor, ideal for capturing those evanescent moments when the sky, the land, and the ocean interact with eachother to create something magical, something we all recognize in this very special place. These paintings are sold as fine art reproductions, done on high quality watercolor paper with the latest and most exacting digital technology, capturing all the texture, detail, and tonal nuance of the original. "I've been painting for 35 years and never thought of having my work reproduced. Until now. Because the technology - and my printer, Print Logic, Inc., are so good." Carter Black also accepts commissions for specific subjects in watercolor and acrylic on canvas. The prints are large, with an image size of approximately 28 x 44", and are as durable, with pigmented inks, and as color fast as the original painting. They sell for $1,200 each. They need to be seen first hand to be appreciated. This can be done at the artist's studio at 327 Ilihau St. in Kailua (two blocks up from the Aikahi Shopping Center) on Saturday mornings between 9:30 and 12:30, and by appointment (call 254-1414).
